It is often said that politics and sports should not mix. However, the cricket matches between India and Pakistan have historically reflected the strained relations between the two nations, with tensions often spilling onto the field. During the Asia Cup match held in Dubai on Sunday, the impact of the recent Pahalgam terror attack was palpable.

Typically, Indian cricketers are not known for being vocal, rarely posting on social media, especially regarding sensitive issues. Yet, on this occasion, Suryakumar Yadav and his teammates made significant statements that resonated within the politically charged atmosphere.

A Tribute to the Armed Forces

Following a remarkable seven-wicket victory over Pakistan, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav dedicated the win to the country's armed forces, expressing solidarity with the victims of the Pahalgam attack. This match marked the first encounter against their traditional rivals since the incident.

In a post-match interview, Suryakumar stated, 'This is a great opportunity for us to stand with the victims and their families from the Pahalgam attack. We want to dedicate this victory to all our armed forces who have shown incredible courage, and we hope to continue inspiring them.'

A Shift in Sportsmanship

Interestingly, the Indian team did not shake hands with their Pakistani counterparts after the match, a customary gesture in sports. During the toss, both captains, Suryakumar and Pakistan's Salman Agha, also refrained from greeting each other.

Suryakumar noted that this victory served as a 'return gift' for his countrymen on his birthday. Indian bowlers, particularly Kuldeep Yadav, excelled, taking three wickets, while Axar Patel and Varun Chakravarthy claimed two each. Pakistan struggled, managing only 127 runs.

In response, India chased down the target in just 15.5 overs, with Suryakumar hitting a six to seal the win before heading straight to the dugout.

Celebrating a Birthday Win

Abhishek Sharma contributed significantly with a quick 31 runs off 12 balls, notably against Pakistan's star bowler Shaheen Afridi. Celebrating his 35th birthday, Suryakumar scored an unbeaten 47 runs off 37 balls, expressing that this victory was a delightful feeling and a perfect birthday gift for India.

He emphasized that playing against Pakistan felt no different than facing any other opponent, stating, 'We approach every team with the same strategy.' He also praised the spin department, highlighting the team's recent success in the Champions Trophy.

Kuldeep Yadav was named 'Player of the Match' for the second consecutive game, sharing, 'I focused on executing the strategy and adapting my bowling to the batsman. I still have room for improvement and aim to get better with each match.'
